GSI User Conference 2019
Our GSI User Conference in October 2019 was a very informative and intense activity. The two days provided a platform for our clients to share experiences and discuss requirements with GSI and partners. It focused on digitalisation and the implementation of a full electronic file.
Open patent service
In the presentation by Dürr AG we learned how they use the Open Patent Service interface to the EPO in a very creative way. Not only that they compare their existing pool of data with those published by the EPO to enhance quality or to complete their bibliographic data, but their approach is also to establish a database for M&A projects via download from OPS to their IP Management System. The bibliographic data of the acquired portfolio are easily built up and verified and so any further administrative and management activities on the M&A portfolio can be based on a solid framework. The audience agreed that this is a very smart und useful application of the OPS interface.
Online filing and more?
In another session, speakers from Miele &Cie.KG and Vossius & PARTNER Patentanwälte Rechtsanwälte mbB presented their business processes for filing via CMS respective EPO Filing Client. Efficiency of data im- and exports to WiNPAT via the interfaces were discussed. Michael Lindblom, a representative of the EPO, gave an up-to-date perspective of the EPOs developments and improvements and first-hand information adding substantial value to the discussion.
Setting a focus on the right topic is crucial for any software service provider. Therefore, we carried out a survey, asking for preferences on how to continue the development of the interfaces to the patent offices among the participants of the User Conference. Clearly the customer focus was on the development and improvement of the patent offices’ electronic mail box systems. This will certainly influence our roadmap in the near future.
IP Now – the new cloud based IP Management System
IP Now at a glance was the first topic on the agenda of the second day. General usability concepts, working with files and workflows, document handling and management of terms and tasks were shown in a quick run-through by team members of GSI. Our new product received considerable appreciation by the audience. We are very confident that our approach to include user feedback at an early stage combined with our more than 30 years of experience in IPMS will result in a premium product with excellent usability. IP Now will enable an efficient and easy use of the electronic file.
Constraints and requirements of IP Law Firms and IP Departments in the future
Full implementation of the electronic file is certainly the main focus of many IP Law Firms. Seemann & Partner Patentanwälte gave some examples of internal electronic communication that was individually customised and adapted to their needs in WiNPAT. Their main requirement for improving their processes was efficient task handling and management. They see the integration of up to date project management features like job handling and monitoring as mandatory features of electronic files.
From Brose Fahrzeugteile GmbH & Co. KG we heard about a potential near future scenario with autonomous mobility devices and the challenges they bring. Change has become the driving force and any organisation has to adapt continuously. Managing the IPR of Brose focuses especially on deeper integration of the relevant systems like administration and monitoring. The development of agile and strong networks among enterprises and service providers are crucial.
Added value through multiple interfaces
Any electronic file is only as powerful as its in- and outputs. We are constantly looking for opportunities to develop seamless integration to other sources of relevant data. As an IPMS software provider we want to focus on our core business and our strengths – handling, management and administration of the electronic IPR portfolio. This involves data exchange with other service providers like annuity services, translators, researchers, 3rd party monitoring or nationalisation and validation institutions. There are numerous players on the market offering these services with high competency and quality. We are aiming to provide a platform for integrating such services. Therefore, we have invited colleagues form PAVIS GmbH, Morningside IP and europatent GmbH to discuss their ideas with our clients, moderated professionally by Dr. Hans-Josef Wolf.
